The winner of the Herbert Power Stakes, Delphi, could have problems on the road to the Melbourne Cup after receiving a weight penalty.
The horse was actually on the right track to make it to the Melbourne Cup field. However, after doing the Herbert Power Stakes field, he earned a 1kg weight penalty after winning the particular competition.
He received a penalty for the group 2 Herbert Power Stakes win at Caulfield. He received the Caulfield Cup ballot for last Saturday’s Herbert Power Stakes. But the officials could not penalize him during the event.
But on Monday, the families of Anthony and Sam Freedman must receive the news about the decision about Delphi. The penalty indeed produced such significant results for Delphi. Delphi went to 24th in the latest Melbourne Cup order of entry. The field of 24 will conduct the Melbourne Cup.
Now it is Delphi’s turn to decide his future. If the results of the Caulfield Cup are not so great, it could affect the ballot order.
The fun fact is that the latest Herbert Power Stakes winner to win the Melbourne Cup was in 1999, by a popular rider, namely Rogan Josh.
Delphi is on the third line of betting for the upcoming event at $11. Delphi attained ballot exemtion to the Culfield Cup.
The TAB rates the Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained horse as the fourth best bet for next week’s Group 1 Caulfield Cup following his victory in Saturday’s Group 2 event over 2400m (2400m).
Nonconformist is presently the second favorite in the Caulfield Cup betting odds, with Incentivise a $2 outsider. In the Group 1 event, Nonconformist finished second to Might And Power. With Incentivize, young Werther has risen to third place overall.
When it came time to run the Herbert Power Stakes, Delphi ($11) won by a length over The Chosen One ($11), with Hasta La War ($17) finishing third, another length behind. Damien Oliver entered the race as the $1.95 underdog.
Delphi’s weight will be cut from 57 to 52.5 kg for the Caulfield Cup, and Oliver expects the stayer to do well.
He’d be able to shake it off, according to Oliver.
